The Corona Virus has changed a lot of things in the world and weddings are no exception. So, it’s safe to assume that whether you’re hosting a Covid-19 Wedding or attending one, there will be new rules and etiquette to follow.

Aside from following government regulations (where applicable), the rules that you as a host put in place will largely be up to you and your venue. The only important part is communicating those rules to your guests and enforcing them.

Wondering how to navigate hosting a wedding in the COVID-19 age? Let’s look at the new etiquette standards when it comes to your big day.

First thing ~ Decide what safety procedures you will implement at your event. Will you require masks? Proof of Vaccination? A COVID-19 test before the wedding? Enforce social distancing? Nothing at all?

It’s understandable that you may feel they are unnecessary, especially if your guest list consists of only your immediate family and closest friends, but some people may find it unnerving if the event appears to be a free-for-all. At the very least, make sure to implement social distancing wherever possible, and provide hand sanitizer on site. You may also want to have a few masks on hand just in case someone didn’t bring theirs.

Once you’ve decided on what safety measures will be in place, make sure to make them clear on the invitation or a guest information card. No one wants to be surprised by a mask mandate upon arrival.

Even if there are no specific requirements, in the simplest form, it’s polite to add the line “safety measures will be in place” to the invite to soothe any of the attendees’ worries. You may also want to decide on a few additional rules, such as no invited guests plus one or that no gifts should be brought to the venue.  This could be on a separate enclosure card, maybe titled: For the Health and Safety of Our Guests.

You should expect that more people are likely to decline, perhaps due to reasons beyond their control. Similarly, some may have to cancel at the last minute. Don’t take this personally. Because of this it is wise to have a “B List” of people you’d like to invite in case your first chosen round can’t make it.

Because most places still have gathering limitations, most likely there will be quite a lot of people you won’t be able to invite. How do you approach this? Well, there are two schools of thought on this topic. Some couples have opted to live stream their ceremony and reception so that their loved ones can still attend virtually. An alternative to this is keeping a social media account regularly updated with photos and video uploads.Others, however, find this a bit tacky and rude, seeing it as showing off an event to people who were clearly not invited. In which case, couples choose to ban any and all social media posts until the day after. That way, no one will feel left out.

Since government rules can change very quickly, you should find a way to update your guests as soon as possible. A wedding website or social media page is a great way to do this. Changes may include a rescheduling or a full-on cancellation. Or, it may be the introduction of new safety measures.

If you feel that the threat of last-minute alterations is quite high, you may also choose to give a heads up on your invite by adding “rules/dates/times subject to change.”

Note that a change may also be a further limitation on gatherings, in which case you would have to uninvite someone—unfortunately. In such cases, don’t make it a public announcement. It’s better to address these kinds of matters personally or via phone. If the persons in question matter a lot to you, consider hosting a secondary event just to commemorate the occasion with them.

If you are looking on-line for invites you will not be able to feel and see the stock first hand. If it is for a special occasion such as your wedding, bridal shower, birth announcement etc… you most likely would want to go to a place where you can see your options first hand and touch and see the invites/announcements. There is a big difference even between 110 lb. stock and 130 lb. When looking and ordering on-line you will not be able to view it first-hand.

We can only imagine how disappointing current events are for all couples getting married in the next two months. The coronavirus has turned so many things upside down, and now you’re left choosing how to move forward and postpone your wedding.

Should we reduce our guest count or postpone the wedding?

Of course, the answer depends on the couple and what they feel is most important to them as well as whether or not vendors will refund money or be flexible.

Once you’ve decided what you want to do, the next step is communicating it. If you’re postponing your wedding, traditional wedding etiquette says to send out printed announcements but the use of technology is completely acceptable. If you choose to send announcements, you can send reception cards with the appropriate wording (see below) but make sure the announcement gets to recipients at least two weeks before the wedding date. If you choose to use email, , Facebook or some other form of technology, you can use the same wording.

No doubt, this is a tough decision! Some couples may feel strongly that they want to celebrate with everyone on their list or they may find they simply can’t reschedule at the same venue within the year. Postponing is a great option for both reasons. Other couples may feel that the most important thing is simply saying their vows and they’re happy to do that with 10 people or 200. Do what’s right for you, and remember that your wedding will still be incredibly special no matter what changes may come.

Are you planning a wedding during the Pandemic? Recent events regarding the coronavirus are surely influencing your wedding plans, especially if the wedding date is in the next few months.  Although the coronavirus may be new, addressing the unexpected is not new to the world of wedding planning, and we’re here to help you do a little extra planning.

If you feel a little panic, that’s okay. Remember the precautions we’re seeing across the United States are happening in order to keep the vast majority of people safe.

Wedding planning is stressful let alone planning during a time like this but it’s 100% doable with a little extra planning and preparing. Here is some general advice to help you with planning a Wedding During the Pandemic.

Expect Delays

Get ahead of possible frustration by checking on any major purchases like attire, flowers, dinner menu, etc. Anything being shipped is subject to delays. If you catch these issues early enough, you can likely adjust your plans to accommodate!

Check Contracts

Check your contracts with vendors and see what the cancellation policies are, and check on what kind of modifications are possible. This will give you an idea of your options and where financial impact could be felt. Either way, you will want to check in with vendors.

Reduce the Guest List

You can do this in a number of ways. You can tell anyone who has to travel that you are choosing to limit the celebration to local guests only, in light of recent events. You can also consider having a small, intimate wedding with just family and close friends; then send out wedding announcements to everyone else. No matter what you do, technology can be a big help! Stream your wedding ceremony for anyone who can’t make it but wants to share in the joy of your vows.

Rethink the Format

Many cities are limiting the amount of people that can gather in one place, so postponement may be an option. Postponements can happen for a variety of reasons but most often they are a reaction to natural disasters such as hurricanes or flooding, and sometimes they are considered if there has been a death in the family. If you don’t want your wedding to be inhibited by the coronavirus, you can postpone and send out announcements with the new date. This is a really great option if your vendors are willing to work with you on rescheduling.

Most importantly, don’t be discouraged! Your wedding will happen, and it will be beautiful. You might even find that the day is that much more meaningful because you’ll be focused on what really matters: the vows you’re about to make to each other, and sharing that joy with the people you love most. Today’s couples are resourceful, and will find ways to make these things happen despite current events. In this, we are confident!
